MS Astronautical Engineering

Experience

Having completed two careers, one in the us air force working in the space industry and the other in it, i have a wealth of experience upon from which to draw examples for math. i can teach maths from year 5 to university level. i have a ms degree in astronautical engineering and taught university level maths for 14 years in the usa. i also tutored math for two years in california. i am currently tutoring math in melbourne australia.

Tutoring Approach

I can make the topics interesting and am very patient. If a student is struggling, I try to find the right "handle" to use to allow the student to understand the concept. I teach math because I enjoy watching students catch on to a concept. I also enjoy it when a student who did not previously value math, becomes very interested and self-motivated to learn more. My goal is to empower students to understand math on their own by getting them to realise that the concepts are not as difficult as they had previously thought. I am understanding of the difficulties they may have with math and am constantly encouraging.

PhD Chemistry

Experience

I have been tutoring year 11, year 12 and first year undergraduate chemistry part-time for the last couple of years. i am a phd candidate at university of melbourne and i completed my masters in chemistry at melbourne university as well. i have an exceptional grasp of the chemistry subject matter, having done a bachelors, masters and phd (cont.) in the subject. this allows me to deliver chemistry lessons with exceptional clarity. i will teach with examples and anecdotes from everyday life and my experience in the laboratory as a chemist to give you a context along with the concept. as you start relating to these elusive :-) ideas you will naturally develop more interest in chemistry which will improve your understanding and retention of the subject.

Tutoring Approach

In my groups, I follow a problem solving approach. We will work through a lot of problems to break down and introduce the concepts in bite size pieces while having a lot of fun. I also make sure that we practice a lot of exam type questions while having fun discovering chemistry, so that you are prepared for the exam. I am an enthusiastic and responsible tutor. I put in effort to revise and organise my lessons prior to going for a tutoring session, so that all the concepts are fresh in my head. I am also very good at identifying the gaps in my student's understanding and don't shy away from putting in extra work to fill in those gaps. For example, many times I have noticed that the students can't quite grasp a chemistry concept because they don't know the founding ideas that may follow from physics or maths. I bring them up to speed in these areas rather that just continuing on and having a student who is intimidated by chemistry.

BSc with First Class Honours in Mathematics

Experience

I have a first class honours degree in mathematics from the uk and have been employed by the university of glasgow as a summer school mathematics tutor. i am starting a masters in pure mathematics at melbourne university in 2018. i have tutored early high school maths through to third-year university mathematics, as well as being employed as a maths tutor for a university summer school. i believe that strong academic performance can be obtained by hard work together with good instruction. i have tutored for the past 5 years both privately and at the university of glasgow. i pride myself on helping students see the enjoyable aspects of the subject, spurring on the development of natural motivation and fascination with the subject, without which makes mathematics difficult for some. throughout my first three years at university, i obtained hd in all my mathematics subjects. however, this was quite difficult for me, having a poor high school education many years previously, i had to relearn all of the high school mathematics on my own, before returning to university. as a result, i always felt behind the curve, and that i had to work twice as hard as many other top students. this has put me in a great position for tutoring, especially for students that find the subject quite difficult, since i have approached my learning from a perspective of a struggling student. this means i am acutely aware of where troubles in understanding come from, and exactly how to overcome them.

Tutoring Approach

Whilst tutoring students I attempt to keep a 50/50 ratio of student speaking or writing to tutor instructing. Keeping the student interacting and speaking provides a perfect way to do two things simultaneously: 1) checking the student understands the material on the spot, and 2) as the student interacts then they reinforce what we are covering to help with recall afterwards. I also emphasise mathematical spoken language, since writing and speaking involve two different parts of the brain. Interacting with the student via both mediums allows for the student to become a lot more comfortable with the abstract symbols, both in writing and reading.
