9 Good Reasons Why Parents should Encourage Kids to Play

In today’s world most of the children are sitting at their homes not doing any physical activities or playing sports. In olden times children would just love to play outdoor games like cricket, football, tennis etc. But due to various reasons children are not going out to play sports although they have all the amenities and facilities. Parents need to encourage their children to go out and play as physical sports are extremely important for the growth and development of their children.

Lack of outdoor games in today’s generation

In today’s generation due to the introduction of latest technology, mobiles, tablets, computers, internet and social media there is a lack of urge to play games. All the kids just want to chat on their phone, watch movies, browse through social media and do various number of activities all day long. In all this they don’t take interest in playing games outside their home. Children should be encouraged to play outside and a schedule should be made in which a fix amount of time should be given to T.V and mobile. Rest of the time should be divided between studies and outdoor games. Children should always be encouraged to play outdoor games by their parents and teachers. Following are the reasons why it is important to play:

  1. It improves their fitness and health. Playing sports is essential to keep the child’s joints and muscles fit. It also saves from diseases like obesity and laziness. As we know very few of the overweight children are sports maniac.

  2. It helps kids to overcome adversity. By boosting your child to make and keep a pledge to a sports team you are teaching your child how to overcome adversity which is critical for life success.

  3. Sports and playing games teaches the value of team effort. It teaches the child about how to celebrate and acknowledge each other’s success and what it feels to contribute in a winning cause.

  4. Sports make the child realize that losing in life is not the end of the world. It teaches how to appreciate each other’s work and how to overcome defeat and prepare for further challenges.

  5. It is the basic character building of a person. Sport is as much about failing as it is succeeding, it is how you react to failure that counts. Not allowing your child to give up when he is afraid of failing or is rejected by friends builds their character.

  6. Playing sports teaches you good social skills. When children play they tend to become friendlier and it is good for their communication skills. It gives children opportunity to talk with their adults like coach and referee which is an excellent life skill.

  7. It increases academic performance. Studies show children which play sports have higher level of academic performance. There is a range of skills that they need to do well academically, and they learn a lot about them while playing sports.

  8. Children that play games have a fixed goal ahead. Sports help them in achieving those goals. They develop strategic goal oriented thinking, they hence channelize their mind to reach their goals.

  9. It also teaches them how to overcome physical pain and difficulties. As they are bound to get injured while playing sports, these injuries make them mentally and physically tough.

Today the value of sports is decreasing due to lack of space to build proper amenities for kids to play, introduction of video and mobile games and also study pressure. Parents need to make a proper schedule for their children which divides time equally between sports, studies and mobile.
