Blockchain Education in Philippines
- Feb 14, 2019
Blockchain education is becoming a common thing in the Philippines. Its application in different sectors, education in itself, has yet to be implemented.
In an interview with Fintech News Network, Aiai Garcia, who is the ConsenSys Solutions Philippines Lead, said that there is a growing interest in blockchain education in the Philippines but formal blockchain education in the country is still at a very initial stage. James Florentino founder and current CEO of software development company MergeCommit who also pioneered a bitcoin exchange in the Philippines in 2013, cited that the local blockchain community has done several significant blockchain advocacies.
Below are groups that provide blockchain education in the Philippines:
Health-tech firm MediXserve together with the Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) and NEM Foundation with the motive of bringing a holistic approach to blockchain learning in the Philippines, launched the blockchain lab AMBERLab. It focuses on “education, research, incubation, and community.”
UnionBank’s Blockchain Institute
Union Bank of the Philippines launched the Blockchain Institute last October, a six-month program to equip developers to learn capabilities focused on blockchain. As per corporate communications manager Kevin Villacrucis, the program, allows UnionBankers to stay relevant by enrolling in core and digital courses to build capabilities such as data analytics, digital delivery, agile ways of working and more.
Asian Insititute of AI
Artificial Institite ( AI) which is a Manila-based Asian Insititute, certifies qualified IT practitioners including blockchain professionals. The course it has on blockchain assures the knowledge and comprehension of the students in blockchain technology and also its applications. It is at the moment focusing on two blockchain applications — cryptocurrency and identity management.
The Blockchain Space in Manila is one of the best venues in the Philippines to learn about blockchain straight from the local and international key players. It is located at the co-working space Acceler8 in Makati City, Manila and is one of the five chapters of the region-wide Blockchain Space that runs not just blockchain but also cryptocurrency-focused co-working spaces in Southeast Asia. The venue also hosts many educational events and collaborations for the blockchain community.
Also contributing is ConsenSys Academy, the education-tech arm of US-based blockchain software firm ConsenSys. Last year it supported UnionBank’s Blockchain Institute by delivering a five-day Ethereum for Developers course to 100 students and also backed the Asian Institute of AI in the development of their blockchain education.
Blockchain Association of the Philippines
Blockchain education program by the newly-created Blockchain Association of the Philippines (BAP) is still at its inception at this point. Ramon Vicente de Vera, the Vice Chairman recently mentioned plans of proposing the program’s creation to the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), and Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA).
