- Jul 05, 2017
Almost everywhere you go, whether it is at the parties, at a gala event or at a religious affair, smartphones are everywhere. People in a gathering are communicating more on their personal handheld devices than among themselves. Taking “selfies”, “googling” facts, and “checking” maps for finding location people are almost always glued to their smartphones.
Youngsters have developed a special trait. They would rather interact with a smartphone than with real people around. They are suffering from “nomophobia!” Nomophobia is the fear of being without your smartphone. It is a problem that is growing at a very fast rate and especially making youngsters its victims.
According to a recent study around 11 percent of the people using smartphones are tapping their screens and checking for notifications and updates every few minutes. Almost every minute the people are either in some social networking site or the other. Posts, tweets, and pings are taking all their time and the people are turning unproductive and inactive.
Did you know that 1 in 10 Americans has admitted using smartphones even during sex? Young adults of the age group 18-34 are more likely to use smartphones in between a sexual activity and their number is 1 in every 5. In fact, 12 percent of the people believe that smartphones are bad for a healthy relationship and therefore smartphone addiction should be getting rid of.
How to get rid of the addiction?
Turn off notifications: if you are conscious that you have become addicted to smartphones and want to get rid of the habit, the first thing you need to do is to turn off notifications. Almost every second a notification tone rings and you rush to check your phone. The only way to prevent that is to turn off notifications. But if you are scared that you will miss an important mail from office or a message from your loved ones, you can keep the notification of a few important apps open. Shut off rest or the notifications.
Uninstall applications: This may sound a bit mean and impossible, but it will definitely help. If there is any application that disturbs the most with notifications, but it’s the one that you seldom use, you must delete that from your phone forever. Check your phone for the apps you don’t need. Even if you have apps of popular social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter on your laptop, delete the apps on your phone. So, when you wish to check, you can always switch on your laptop and check all the notifications. When you are on the move, it’s not very necessary to know what your friends and acquaintances post on social networking sites. So, you can always come back home and check the sites on your computer.
Keep airplane mode activated for a while each day: If you turn on the airplane mode you will still e able to check the local files and take pictures using your phone. However, it will shut off unwanted notifications for a while. You will be able to stay calm for a while each day, which will be beneficial for your health.
Hide your phone: If you know that you are addicted to your phone and want to get rid of that, you need to sometimes hide your phone. Put up barriers and keep your phone in such a place where you have to move many things to access that. You can have a charging point on top of a book case or can even keep the phone away in the corner that you do not visit often. When there’s a call, you can always go and pick it up.
Mute group chats that you do not respond too: If you are in a group that you do not often respond to, mute it. It could be group that your neighbors have created to chit chat in free time. However, that could be disturbing you and turning your attention to the smartphone every time there is a message in that group. It may not be for you. So, you must mute the group. If ever you want to check, you can always open the group and check if there is anything important.
Take initiative to get rid of your smartphone habit. IT could be detrimental for your health as well as your daily activities.
