Top 10 Tips and Tricks to Improve Your Freestyle Swimming Techniques
- Nov 23, 2017
If you want to improve your freestyle swimming technique, you will have to religiously work on your technique and mentality.
The following tips can also help.
1. Rigorously practice your stroke before the meet
Your stroke fluidity won’t come overnight. It takes some time, and quite justifiably so.
So be sure to taper yourself at least a week before the meet and work your socks off out till the judgment day.
2. Focus on decreasing your drag
Drag is the resistance of your body against water. If you find ways to keep it at bay, you will get improved results for sure.
Most freestyle swimmers tend to focus more on swimming as quickly as possible; not swimming with the least amount of drag. If you are one among them, you are making a mistake.
Remember, it takes true skill to bring down the drag. There are a few ways through which it can be done like improving the balance of your posture or swimming taller. Your instructor can help you with this.
3. Swim taller
Like we said, this technique can help you swim with the least amount of drag thereby increasing your speed at one, and the same time.
Try to make yourself as tall as possible when you are in the water. The longer you make yourself, the faster you will swim.
4. Take reasonable breaks in between
Do not swim for hours at a stretch. If you do so, you will risk damaging your muscles because of constant exertion.
Take short breaks in between to let your body recover and restore its normal oxygen levels.
5. Roll your body from side to side
For every pull you make, your body should roll to the side even if you aren’t breathing on every single stroke. This would make you swim faster and better over time.
Note: Do not breathe after each stroke. That would slow you down considerably during the swim.
6. Efficient kicking is the key
When you kick, your feet should never break the surface of the water or go way below your body line. If you do this, you will be off balance creating more and more drag in the process.
You should always kick your feet in line with your body to get the best possible results.
7. Propel faster
This doesn’t mean you should focus solely on your strength than skill.
Remember, only 10% of your strength comes from your arms. Rest of the 90% comes from your legs. Hence, you should focus strongly on ways to kick hard while making sure that your arms aren’t slowing you down at one, and the same time.
This would help you propel forward faster at the time of your race.
8. Align your hand with your forearm and make them face backward
You will have to be an absolute master of this technique during your practice to maximize your freestyle swimming speed.
This will make it easier for you to displace water during the swim and also allows natural movement of your arms backward during the stroke.
9. Try to maintain a neutral positioning of your head
Aim for a neutral head position throughout your stroke. Keeping your head this way helps to keep drag at bay and also makes your strokes more efficient.
Incorrect positioning of your head may give you that “sinking” feeling during your stroke because of your lowered hips. You should also look down during this entire time, not up or forward to maintain your horizontal positioning during the swim.
10. If you are in a long race, conserve your energy
Don’t use all of your energy in the first 50 or 100 meters if you are participating in a long race.
If it’s just a 50-meter course, swim fast from the word “go.” 100+ meters is a bit tougher; so save up on your energy until those final moments in time.
Okay, so that’s pretty much it. Hope the list of tips and tricks mentioned above come in helpful for your practice. Goodbye and good luck!
