A nine member Thai delegation, which included Dr Amporn Pinasa, Deputy Secretary-General of the Thai Ministry of Education Office of the Basic Education Commission and Chitralada School Director Associate Prof Dr Yuvadee Nakapadungrat signed a memorandums of understanding(MoU) with six Dunedin secondary schools.
The MOU will ratify a relationship between Bayfield High School, Kavanagh College, Otago Boys' High School, Otago Girls' High School, Queen's High School and Taieri College and 12 Princess Chulabhorn Science High Schools and Chitralada School situated in Bangkok.
Dr Nakapadungrat said that this was a great opportunity for Thailand and its students. The memorandum was signed only after performing research on the quality of Dunedin's education system.
She stated that eight Thai students were sent to attend classes in six Dunedin secondary schools. They stayed with the host families for 2 months and loved the experience. The opportunity to study the English language was especially exciting for them. Dr Nakapadungrat was impressed with the wide variety of subjects the students were able to study along with the Dunedin students.
She was extremely pleased with the education quality and is looking forward to more such collaborations like student exchanges, teacher exchanges and teacher development.
Signatory to the memorandum and Enterprise Dunedin director John Christie said the Thai international student market was a strong one for the city and in future the secondary school programme might develop further to include joint school projects between classes in Dunedin and Thailand.
