The Best Things Students can do This Season to Enjoy Learning
- Jan 18, 2017
Many students view learning and education as a serious and unexciting activity. For them learning is akin to a chore that is done because it has to be done. They regard education and learning as an unpleasant task and try to avoid it as far as possible.
Learning, however, can be fun and enjoyable when it is mixed with a bit of entertaining activities. Education and entertainment can go hand in hand, more so when innovative methods are applied to make learning more appealing.
Things students can do to enjoy learning
1. Discuss concepts with friends
Instead of stopping over at a friend’s home for the usual chit-chat, visit a friend or call a group of friends to discuss studies for a fixed period of time. This method is very effective as you already share a level of comfort with your friends and you can absorb the study concepts much better by this way. This method is quite helpful for extroverted students who love being around their circle of friends and enjoy discussions. The friendly talk session can be coupled with a study session.
2. Learning by watching videos based on concepts
Watching educational videos is a great way to learn and retain new things. When we watch an educational video, we engage our eyes, ears, and mind in it. There are numerous documentaries and movies that can help us to learn things related to our studies. The biographies of great personalities such as Margaret Thatcher, Abraham Lincoln, Mahatma Gandhi, John Nash, Muhammad Ali, etc can help a person a lot in knowing the life stories of these personalities. One can learn a great deal about science subjects by watching documentaries. One can learn the concepts of mathematics from educational videos released by Khan Academy.
3. Learning by understanding through experiments on scientific concepts
Learning through experiments gives a student first-hand knowledge about a concept in science. By experimenting, a student can know the procedure and the final outcomes of a phenomenon. By studying theory, a student can memorize a process. However, by experimenting, a student can understand the basic principle of a study. A student can learn better by understanding through experiments on scientific concepts.
4. Learning by visiting a museum, a national park, or a botanical garden
History students, or students of any other streams such as anthropology, fine arts, architecture, music, sociology, political science, can learn a great deal by visiting a well-stocked museum. A good museum not only provides a glimpse of a region’s history, but it also reveals a lot about the social system, political system, music scene, arts and architecture, among others. A museum offers glimpses of the heritage and way of life of a particular civilization. Likewise, zoology and botany students can visit a zoological park or a botanical garden to know about their field of studies.
5. Learning while playing quiz on specific concepts with friends
Students can play quizzes on some specific concepts with their friends. This will not only increase the participation of every student, but will help them learn about their studies that they did not know before. This will help the students to learn in a fun manner and give a healthy competition to each other. This is far more effective than self-study and helps in faster learning.
6. Learning by using equipment or attending a workshop
The knowledge gained from first-hand application stays for a long time with a student. Students can learn about a technology or equipment by using those by themselves. A student can learn about a robotic technology by attending a workshop or by actually using one of those.
