Ways to Avoid Stress for Students

Stress is a part of everyday life. In actual fact, we need some level of stress so that we can grow and change. However, too much of something is never good and when that something is stress, it can become crippling. Too much stress can encourage negative thoughts and even send people into depression in the worst case scenarios.
Student life these days is replete with stress of all types. First of all, there is the pressure to perform well in studies, sports and extracurricular activities, especially as the students grow older. This pressure comes from parents, teachers and all of society. Secondly, there are the pressures of relationships with their peers and the need to fit in and for acceptance. Who doesn’t want to make friends and be accepted by the people around them?
Unfortunately, all the pressure that students face results in tremendous amounts of stress for them. They worry about having enough time and energy to juggle all that they have on their plate and also stress about how well they are doing academically and socially. The attempt to manage everything at the same time can leave them overwhelmed and cause a lot of problems – both physical and mental. Therefore, it becomes essential that students know ways and means of avoiding stress or dealing with it.
This doesn’t mean that you have to hit the gym for two or three hours every day. Simply ensuring that you’re doing something that gets your heart rate up is enough. This means activities such as brisk walking, running, cycling or even swimming for about 45 minutes daily. Not only does this help keep your body healthy but also your mind. When you exercise regularly, your body releases chemicals known as endorphins. These endorphins make you feel good and reduce stress and tension. They allow your mind to concentrate on things other than whatever is stressing you out. Moderate exercise on a regular basis is as good for mild depression as therapy and medication.
While exercise is primarily focused on the body, meditation aids the mind. Something as simple as sitting for 10 minutes every day with everything around you as quiet as possible can help you reduce stress to a great extent. Use good breathing techniques so that more oxygen gets into your blood and you feel calmer and more able to beat the stress.
There is no doubt about the fact that being a student means that you have an insane number of things that you have to complete in what seems an unreasonably short amount of time. However, if you plan ahead, you can avoid a lot of stress. Create schedules and timetables and try to follow them as much as possible. At the same time, learn to be flexible and make your schedules flexible too so that if something unexpected comes up you can adjust your schedule accordingly. Not doing so will result in an increase in stress levels rather than a means of avoiding stress.
Keep track of assignments, activities, notes and important papers, everything to do with your education. If everything is lying around in a mess, you will end up wasting time looking for what you need. You may even forget about things that aren’t in front of you if you haven’t kept track of them. When you are organized, you know your deadlines and test dates and time management becomes much easier. You know what’s on your plate and you can create your schedules accordingly. More importantly, you won’t stress out about something that you remember at the last minute or the time that you’ve wasted looking for notes and papers because they weren’t where you thought they’d be.
One of the biggest problems most students face is sleep deprivation. They have so much on their plates that staying up late becomes a habit. However, sleep deprivation can affect your learning abilities and your memory. In addition, you may often find yourself nodding off in class or during lectures. All in all, depriving yourself of sleep ends up being counterproductive. Ensure that you make time on your schedule for adequate sleep or, at least, for power naps.
Stress can make you feel as though your brain has shut down completely or is having a meltdown worse than a nuclear reactor. However, if you practice these methods and techniques you can avoid stress and if you can’t avoid it entirely, you can minimize it.
