I am passionate in languages, be it english or chinese. i also know very basic japanese and malay. in junior college, i was the third batch taking "english language and linguistics", which was then a new addition to the a level syllabus. as one of the five who scored a out of a class of 24 students, i am confident that i have grasped the rigour of writing and analysing in english. despite my a level results, my literature and general paper results have been consistently above average in school exams (top 1% for gp in jc1), and my literature essays have been model essays for the cohort. i love teaching, especially when sharing the little tricks i have in understanding subject material. in a nutshell, i believe that languages are a proxy to understanding the world better. i hope to continue honing my skills at teaching and helping students excel at the subjects i love.
I believe that for any student, their foundation has to be strong for future progress in the subject. For English, this means basic grammar rules, and memorisation of collocations and idioms. However, this should not be done by mere drills (comprehension and composition). Increasing exposure of the student to a language is best done by interaction with stories and videos. This makes the learning process more entertaining and memorable. Usually, I bring in news clippings and short stories for my O level students, so that they can learn from different writing styles and are also exposed to current affairs.
