I am an expat british native english speaker, settled in bangkok 20 years. well educated at universities in uk & france. private tutor to family of thai senator 1983 -2010. private online tutor to thai student at university in canada. i am passionate about teaching english. i speak english with received pronunciation (british english of the kind the bbc was famous for many years ago) and speak clearly & slowly, avoiding idiomatic english. i continue to work online as an english language subeditor in healthcare-hospitals here in thailand.
It is vital here in Thailand to make teaching a fun experience for students. The 'sanook' element cannot be underestimated. The same might be said for a teacher's understanding of cross cultural sensibilities - fortunately I believe I have acquired a sense of 'graengjai'. Well thought out lesson-plans give the class its optimum structure, impact & pace. I use my 'actor's' voice & good eye-contact to establish mutual trust, respect & participation. I believe it is necessary to encourage the student to be pro-active in class, with the student voicing his participation in a ratio of 60:40 with teacher. I am sensitive to the pace at which students learn in class & will tailor my teaching accordingly. I believe that my best position is as an online tutor to Thai university students in the Kingdom & overseas. I have taught, brain-stormed, assisted essay plans, edited & proofed text online (plus phone linkup) in a variety of subjects at university level: history, international politics, international law & institutions, English literature, English as a foreign language, business English & communication, English for local & international hotel & hospitality industry, English for healthcare/medical/hospitals. My own, all consuming passion in life is gastronomy but my life's vocation is teaching, all that we need to know to prepare us to be good parents, responsible citizens & net givers rather than takers!
